Mapping Marriage and Migration in Emancipation-era Virginia
Sources:
Source data for Mapping Marriage and Migration is contributed courtesy of the Library of Virginia. The data is derived from transcriptions of cohabitation registers, which are part of the Local Records archival collections at the Library. These records, which are currently available for select localities only, were the legal vehicle by which former slaves legitimized both their marriages and their children. For more information on cohabitation registers and for access to digital images and pdf transcriptions of the records, please visit the Cohabitation Registers collection at Virginia Memory. Documenting the extant cohabitation records throughout the state is an ongoing project of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia.
