June 9, 1853

Thursday the 9th. We are in sight of stupendous “Court House Rock.” Reached it by noon. It looks to be about two miles from the road, but is 8. One of our company visited it and found it to be a huge pile of sand rock, very soft. Could easily cut it with a knife. There are a great many names on it. It has the appearance of a Court House at a distance. It is said to be about 300 feet high. Came 17 miles to-day and camped in sight of Chimney rock.
