—Of all the morale pers that this war has revealed, the man whose name heads this paragraph is the most foul and hideous. The records of party tergiversation and personal corruption nowhere shew his parallel. Such a leap as that man has made from the pinnacle of ultra Southern Rights to the deepest and slimiest abyss of Abolitionism is without an example in political history. It is almost incredible that the being who now howls for halters, dungeons, and exile, for the Southern leaders, was himself an ardent and boisterous champion of the South till the hour when the South needed friends, and then, in an instant, he sprang into the ranks of its bitterest and vilest enemies. Rotten, rotten to the core, and absolutely boastful of his foul deformities and glorying in his shame! And he talks of halters for traitors! The false, treacherous villain! He has not even the remorse of Judas Iscariot, or he would put a halter around his own caitiff neck and relieve mankind of the whitest-liveried and blackest hearted monster that the world has seen for eighteen hundred years.
